Small and Medium Enterprises can Make Use of the Existing Integrated Advantage of Clustered Industries to Establish your Own Innovative Integration

Writer / James LIN
Within the strong strategy of R &D, strength and continuous upgrading of manufacturing flexibility and efficiency which has experienced many years of development, Taiwan enterprises truly have accomplished the integration of global OEM, it’s exporting value have been yearly reach new heights.

In accordance with the basic theory of competition, the success will always attract more imitators which will be gradually dyed from the blue ocean into the Red Sea. In addition to large enterprises who are capable of allocating its global marketing budget for advertising its brand. Most of small and medium enterprises used to work with the OEM business model, the most direct integration are often fall on the manufacturers who possess of the strength of manufacturing and technology research and development.

These of outstanding veteran enterprises have a pragmatic understanding, even if the OEM has entered the era of lowest-profit; at least, there were still some profits existed, the more basic knowledge is that those of small individuals and large businesses, if there are no sufficient living providing, how can you expect to build the brand for business transition.

An interesting observation from Mainland China in recent years is that the development process of the strategy of Mountain Fortress “SAN ZHAI” is worthwhile to learn from, its resources of Innovative industries are probably less than Taiwan's small and medium enterprises possess. There is also an alternative thinking, perhaps in addition to technologies other than vertical integration, we could give some thought to whether there are other possibilities: For example, the vertical integration on creative industries?

Of course, the small and medium enterprises are not possible to carry out the merge such as HTC procured One & Co, even if no fear of capitals, the single integration of different design culture team, I am afraid, there are some difficulties for those of industries who has always been good in OEM, is not a small challenge.

In the difficult-crossing obstacle, we would like to propose an effective bridge to link with three of them may be the possible solution. In fact, the principle is to care them just like you care about yourself, when manufacturer who faced with the need of transition, the end of procurement will also face with the same pressure. It is possible to build up the faster e-marketing channel to develop more innovative products to continuously meet the needs of market. As the owner or company of creative design, the life cycle of creative is difficult to extend for a long term growing, after all, no matter how creative it is, there are nothing to say, if they are not able to create business success.

EFD Wins 2009 Vision Award from Surface Mount Technology Magazine http://www.foxbusiness.com/story/markets/industries/industrials/efd-wins--vision-award-surface-mount-technology-magazine/ 2009-04-09 00:02:03 Whether the cooperation between “Alibaba” and “Taiwan Trade” of “TAITRA” can truly bring the new niche and opportunities for exporting enterprises in http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_128.html Writer: James LIN

Whether the cooperation between “Alibaba” and “Taiwan Trade” of “TAITRA” can truly bring the new niche and opportunities for exporting enterprises in Taiwan.

In recent days, the most shocking news is that “Alibaba” have announced its strategy-cooperation with “Taiwan Trade“. The providing solutions and services of twin-network platforms to those of also B2B business and solution providers in this land, the most noted is that the tactical business strategies of “Alibaba” in recent 2 years are actually worthy to pay attention and take as your referential mottos.

I am also one of the long term subscribers of “Weekly International Trade Magazine”, and personally respect the efforts and contributions of “Taiwan Trade” which has been benefited to Small and Medium Enterprises in this land for over the years, and have some psychological mixed feelings. Why, Over the past 10 years, “Taiwan Trade” possessed the most rich resources by withholding Taiwan's industrial advantages to develop and be transformed as the world scale of B2B platform like “Alibaba” has done, if so did, the above mentioned news issued by “Xinhua News Agency” should have been addressed like followings:

“Taiwan Trade” will provide Mainland Chinese enterprises the most superior and valuable service which has also been integrated with the Style of Mainland-China services provided by international brand of “Alibaba”.

Of course, the past is over, we should look forward to the future. To those of OEM manufacturers whose business orientations are not able to have successfully transformed at this stage, which we really should expect such cooperation will bring and strive for some valuable time of keeping the survival and continuance energy to pass the economical crisis and patiently waiting for the comings of next Spring.

In the comparison of network services provided by “Taiwan Trade” of “TAITRA”, I personally thought those of hard-working efforts of “International Trade Weekly Magazine”, “Taiwan exquisite product exhibitions and fairs” have been performed and estimated in obviously outstanding with innovative elements and features. For example, their long term encouraging, reporting and tracing to those of current development circumstances of Small and Medium Enterprises to place and get stuck with their sites to the New Emerging Markets, etc. which are worthy to be praised.

Its specific column of “Creation and the Design” of “International Trade Weekly Magazine” is the most worthy to be recommended, the aim of this special column is to encourage and assist more enterprises to have business transformed with the philosophy of innovative designs. After all, the situation will be like that the profit of hot selling mobile phone produced by HTC can be possibly over earned than its 10 years of efforts on OEM manufacturing.

The age of “DESIGN in TAIWAN” is still a child, it is like any child he who has will-determined to be the “National President”, have to make more efforts than other children, but also needs to have the better training and teaching courses from “Excellent Mentor”, every outstanding enterprise is our good teacher, we are strolling on the learning path from the teaching of mentors in slowly and continuously walking out of our own route.

Although the strategies of “DESIGN in TAIWAN” is different from “Taiwan Trade”, and nevertheless, since the Chinese name in pronunciation is similar to “Taiwan Trade” which caused of some confusion, therefore, we are taking this chance to formally announce to all supporting friends and partners all over the world, from nowadays, the name of “DESIGN in TAIWAN” is to be changed as “Creation to Exquisite” which implied that the more innovations will create the more and better exquisites to be spread all over the world.

Vegetable-based Stationery “Made in Taiwan” http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_126.html Data Source: Sharon Yang, 2009.03.06, “DESIGN in TAIWAN”

Conform to the Trend of Globally Energy Saving and Environmental Protection - Taiwan's "Power In” responds with Vegetables Stationery

Since the EU launched RoHs and WEEE, the awareness of globally energy saving and environmental protection are getting stronger than in the past few years, a number of traditional plastics manufacturers are looking for other kinds of substitute materials like magnesium alloy to replace iron, steel with its advantages of light features, so as to create the replacement of traditional plastic application, that is PLA (Poly Lactic Acid), a kind of plant starch extracted from corn, pumpkin or other plants. It is a kind of safe, non-toxic, eco-environmental protection and sustainable newly developed materials with multiple advantages, it is produced by 100% biodegradable, recyclable, repeated using, non wasted materials and alternative resources.

After PLA decomposed as water and carbon dioxide, the plants carried out photosynthesis, the absorption within the biological cycle can reduce the ecological impact. Taiwan Power In Industrial Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Power In”) and "Chitec Technology Corp. (hereinafter referred to as "Chitec”) both companies have dedicated to research for PLA Stationery manufacturing and materials producing over the past years, Its hygiene security in addition to satisfying the domestic "food container packaging apparatus hygiene standards" and the United States FDA food hygiene safety certification, but also have obtained the Mark Patch for achieving the environmental protection purpose, started to take the first step for making the earth green and implement the sustainable environmental protection.

The principals for extracting the PLA from corn, corn cob, rice husk, straw, maize, groundnut vines and rattan of candida, soybean, sweet potato, bagasse or natural uranium produced as glucose which is the same as beer brewed through fermentation process to get produced into “Lactic Acid”, it’s natural non-toxic and broken-resistance characteristics, are the best selection to replace the PET, PS and other traditional plastic material supplies. In addition to PLA extracted by technology, science contained with the bio-compatibility with the animals, so that it can be used up in the medical surgical sutures, bone screws and other aspects of the human body, its made fiber, can also make neckties, shirts, knitted fabric. Of course, they can also be applied in motorcycle parts, 3C electronic and electrical spare parts, mobile phone material, shell of flash disc and notebook, construction material, food packaging materials, student/office stationery, ceremonial gifts, toys and other plastic products.

Wal-Mart Stores named Taiwan's PLA in procurement
Through many years of researching, Taiwan's traditional plastics processing industry have finally developed out the PLA, based on traditional technologies coupled with scientific research strength, all kinds of producing technology is in leading of the trend, has also aroused the international attention to Taiwan PLA industry. Up to current, most of international PLA products procurement will directly named Taiwanese manufactured products s as their best choice, including the well-known enterprises Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Marks & Spencer, Belu of mineral water and Del Monte.

Aimed to PLA stationery manufacturer, we firstly interview the biodegradable stationery manufacturer “Power In” whose process yields rate reached up to 99% by using Taiwan's self-developed PLA with the decomposition rate in more than 93.8%/180 days.

Our stationery are made from plants – Corn Starch
"Power In” founded in 1989, originally focused on stainless steel stamping and plastic injection of school and office stationery manufacturing. In view of the plastic made tremendous impact to environment, “Power In” has successfully researched and introduced the stationery producing technology of corn extracted materials of PLA (Biodegradable Materials) and thus transformed as the First PLA stationery manufacturer in Taiwan. Up to Today, the started mass-production products of PLA stationeries are Magic Clip (Non-Stapler), Scissors, Ruler, Ball Pens, Pencil Sharpeners, Pencil Cases, Hole Folder, File Folders, Paper Clips, Pen Holders, Reading Shelves, Book Shelves, and other PLA office stationeries, those are totally “Made in Taiwan”, and patented with a number of domestic and foreign certifications, products mainly exported to USA and Japan, and within domestic market they have also shared in more than 80%.

Cross-Industry Cooperation - Creating a Win-Win Niche
Early in 2007, “Power In” and “Chitec” started the cross-industry cooperation, “Power In” provided the technology of Stainless Steel Pressing and PLA Injection Molding, combined with the kind of new and exciting in environmental protection materials of PLA-Chilla provided by the science technology of “Chitec” which project was started in a series of molding development and modification, were strongly sponsored by the capital injection from Chairman Mr. King-Cheng HSU and innovative designs supported by Sheng Cheng Design Co., Ltd .

Based on the deep love to natural environment, experienced many times of failures and frustrations, invested on several ten million dollars of capitals, time consumed experiment, and finally the defects of PLA have been overcome step by step. In February 2008, we definitely developed out the shock-resistance reached up to 400 J / m (excess to the shock-resistance of ABS materials), which has also passed the biodegradation test of ISO14855 and toxicity testing of ASTM D6400 seed germination on biological plastic materials, the technology has than firstly applied on Pencil Boxes, Magic Clips, Scissors, Rulers, and Pencil Sharpeners, etc. which will be introduced onto over the producing line to replace the application of traditional plastic as the goal. In order to couple with the philosophy of global sustainable business development so that the public in the use of stationery can also make some contributions to protect the environment. In 2007, the self-owned brand “Power In” has been launched into International Market.

Break through the Technology of Manufacturing Process
The consumption energy for producing PLA, in comparison with the conventional manufacturing, is 10% ~ 50%, CO2 60%, water 35%. At volume production, the prices will be gradually reduced, the stable providing quantities are expecting to be very competitive. This is why “Power In” has injected all resources into R&D. Although the development has met some frustration, due to the instable PLA size, the insufficient impact-resistance can only be used on simple structured molding at the beginning, however, because of the unique vision and immeasurable success-wanted determination of Chairman Mr. King-Cheng HSU, which coupled with more than 200 patented implementation of mature molding experiences in stainless steel and plastic materials accumulated by General Manager Liang-Chuan TSENG, in addition with the restless test spirit of employee within the department of R&D, at last, the series of PLA products has been successfully developed. If you assessed why the PLA stationery can be successfully developed within Taiwan, the reasons are those of accumulated conventional plastic technology, constantly innovative reformation and quality insist, the Sales Manager Jackson HSU said.

At the beginning, Mr. TSENG, had spent lots of time on the process of automatic production line, he started with setting 4 technicians in 4 of Presser on single strike machine of each within 8 hours a working day, the capacity of each machine are 10,000 – 12,000 pieces/day, semi-automatic machine can process 25,000 – 30,000 pieces/day. After changing into automatic system, the capacity of one machine were upgrading to 72,000 – 75,000 pieces/day with 5 machines managed by only one technician.

You have to re-arrange and turn off the producing line before the defected rate caused or the length of materials transferring belt got staffed, these all are taken care by only one person, which has saved lots of cost for company, the amount sold to market are in 30 million pieces per year.

The daily capacity of stainless steel pushing clip are 150,000 pieces, yielding rate are 99.99% broken the records which even get praised and admired by Japanese buyers and also attracted many famous manufacturers to discuss the cooperative project with “Power In”.

The Philosophy of Living and Working – “Love, Take and Possess”
The long term buried in the project of R&D on stationery, applied more than 200 patents, General Manager Mr. TSENG with whole white-hair face always smile with warm heart, he looks very much like one of American Indian Chief. I asked him what is the most happy thing in his daily life, he said that he has been met with one lady worked at the Household Office in his township who praised one piece of in very good use clip at her hand was made by very special materials of “Corn”, I told her that was made by myself, she was so surprising for knowing it, because she thought that was imported product, as I saw her amazing facial expression and her quality confirmation, which made me feel happy and satisfy, I use to think living is a kind of world fulfilled with “Love, Take and Possess”, whatever you possess, you will hand out, if you have love, you will give out your love, take something from someone, you will hand out something to others, right hand taking, left hand giving, I love to explore the reasons and principles of concept design and implemented into a realistic object. There is input and output in the between, that is the resources of my happy philosophy.

Corn made with Stainless Steel Scissors – Safe to Protect the Environment
Safety Scissors made with corn PLA will not only protect environment but also not hurt the fingers in using, the outfit Corn PLA shell Coated on Stainless Steel blade, the blade part is using 301 stainless steel materials punched, never get rust, blade-edge are specially processed, although it is very sharp, but will not get finger injury, these are useful to children. The made materials are approved with the biodegradable test through ISO 14855 and passed the test of non-toxic seed germination by ASTM D6400 standard, each of angle are carefully designed to match the ergonomics engineering requirement, especially the manufacturing process combined with the improved technology of stamping presser and plastic injection molding for fast assembling. The 1st successfully developed PLA scissors and Magic Clips (non-stapler) are meaningful to General Manager TSENG, they are like his conceived babies, that is a kind of very complicate feelings, hart to describe, look their market growing, I feel very comfortable, all technology problems are solved, in order to widen more marketing channels and shares, we still need to improve the pattern and outfit design, we may have chance to work with “Design SO Coo!” and academic resources.

The Mission of Carbon-Reducing and Energy-Saving
“Power In” currently only attend the Exhibition of Gift and Stationery in Taiwan, and have obtained many orders placed in each exhibition, it has been in very high percentage of hits, stationery buyers are attracted by the unique materials and its quality, after visiting the exhibition, there are always some foreign buyers taking MRT directly to our factory to place their orders, this year we will take part the Fair in Japan during July 8 ~ July 10, in the future, we will be more actively attending the exhibition in Frankfurt/Germany, Not Tak in USA, and Hong Kong for gradually promoting and introducing such kind of energy saving and environmental protection products to all over the world.

Build up the New Force of Blue-Ocean – The Innovative Cooperation of Mainland China and Taiwan

In comparison of network services provided by “Taiwan Trade” of “TAITRA”, I personally thought those of hard-working efforts of “International Trade Weekly Magazine”, “Taiwan exquisite product exhibitions and fairs” have been performed and estimated in obviously outstanding with innovative elements and features.

He also said that the new type of notebook will retail for somewhere between $1000 to $1500. We previously reported that a launch was being pencilled in for the third quarter this year, but this is the first time we have had details on pricing.

This new form factor has a keyboard that slides backwards as the screen is opened, maximising room for the keys, trackpad and palm rest. As we have discussed previously, this new concept is a very interesting development for netbooks as given the size limitations of netbooks and efforts by manufacturers to maximise keyboard space, we would be very surprised to not see this concept appear in an Asus netbook at some point in the future.

All the test results showed the performance and comfort of the yacht are perfect, and provided proof that the Horizon Group has successfully achieved world-class mega yacht builder status.

As the largest yacht ever built in Taiwan, the Horizon Premier 130+ model sets a new benchmark for quality standards. All the materials and equipment lists were selected from well-known and qualified manufacturers, and all the workers were chosen for their excellent skills and craftsmanship. Based on the highest safety and quality standards, the Horizon Premier 130+ has been built to full Det Norske Veritas (DNV) classification together with MCA LY2 code compliance. All designs, materials, equipments, and construction processes were surveyed and checked by DNV, and all system tests were carried out under DNV surveyors’ scrutiny.

The Horizon Premier 130+ is equipped with two Caterpillar C32 main engines, each rated at 1,825 horsepower. Based on the sea trials, the yacht’s top speed is 18 knots at maximum engine output. Cruising speed of 14 knots is achieved with 55 percent engine output. The 11,000-gallon diesel fuel capacity will deliver a range of 1,400 nautical miles at 14 knots, or 3,300 nm range at 11 knots. Electrical power is supplied by two 80kW generators featuring parallel operation. The 75KVA shore power converters also provide parallel function with the generators for “seamless power transfer” capability. In the wheelhouse, all the navigation and communication systems comply with international GMDSS requirements, which ensure safe operation across all oceans. The onboard entertainment system is similarly modern and incorporates Crestron controllers. Utilizing a single remote controller, all the AV systems together with lighting and window shades can be operated at the touch of a button.

The Horizon Premier 130+ owes her refined yet modern look to Florida-based stylist JC Espinosa, and her fine lines and systems engineering to Canadian naval architect Greg Marshall. The interior design is also by JC Espinosa. There is one big tender garage at the stern accessed by three hydraulic doors, a space large enough for one 16-foot jet tender and two Yamaha 375-hp Jetskis. Although the tender garage occupies considerable space, the forward area of the lower deck still allows three luxurious guest staterooms and crew quarters for eight persons. The center spiral staircase accesses all three decks.

By pushing the ventilation trunks to the aft end of deckhouse, the main salon and adjacent dining salon area flow seamlessly without obstructions to block the view. The entire galley is finished in stainless steel surfaces to provide a clean look, better fire safety and easy maintenance. Hull Number 1 has a pair of master staterooms, one located forward on the main deck and the other aft on the sky deck, insuring maximum privacy and independence. In order to use the most suitable material for each space, there are 13 different veneers and 11 marbles installed on the boat. Such diversity requires a lot of managing and craftsmanship, but the final results show it is worth the effort.

MIT is creating the Miracle of the Mega Yacht Kingdom - Made in Taiwan

The island of Taiwan is located on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. The climate in northern Taiwan is subtropical; in southern Taiwan it is considered tropical. Considering the geographical advantages, Taiwan is suitable for the development of the shipbuilding industry. According to a report in “ShowBoats International” Yacht magazine in 2007, Taiwan's yacht manufacturers received orders for a total length of 6,687 feet, accounting for 6% of the global market, ranking fifth behind Italy, the United States, the Netherlands and Germany. Taiwan is Asia's largest yacht building nation. At present, more than 20,000 yachts navigating the global, blue highway are “Made in Taiwan.”

In addition, according to the statistics of Taiwan's Industrial Development Bureau, Taiwan has manufactured yachts with a total length of 81,814 feet to 113,520 feet from 2006 to 2008. The total number of delivered vessels has also increased from 688 to 916. Although yachts in Taiwan are mainly manufactured using FRP composite materials, recently, the industry has shown a gradual trend towards aluminum-alloyed steel.

“Horizon”, “Kha Shing”, and “Ocean Alexander” are three of Taiwan’s luxury yacht builders that are always found among the top 20 yacht builders in the world proofing that Taiwan’s yacht quality is in line with world renowned yacht builders, such as Azimut, Ferretti, Sunseeker and others. In addition, the “Horizon” Group, the largest yacht manufacturer in Taiwan, has made a technological breakthrough by successfully applying the patented “SCRIMP” process to manufacture the world’s largest one-piece 130’ hull, a world record. As a young yacht-building nation, these achievements are impressive and regarded as “Taiwan’s Yacht Miracle”.

Currently Taiwan's yacht export market is mainly focused on the United States with over 200 yachts exported per year. Following this largest market are Western Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. In addition to the above mentioned yacht manufacturers, “Tayana Yachts”, “Dyna Yachts”, “Tachiao Yachts”, “TaShing Yachts”, “Bluewater Yachts”, “Vitech Yachts”, “Joice Yachts”, “President Yachts”, and “Johnson Yachts” as well as the aluminum alloyed steel mega yacht manufacturer “Jade Yachts” are constantly contributing efforts in different specialties. These include material research, model development, and manufacturing technology improvement. Together, they want to create a legend for Taiwan’s yacht industry.

The Trilogy of Intellectual Property Global Marketing http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_30.html 1. Patented R&D
2. Commercialized Patent
3. Globalized Patent Marketing

Patent is to be issued for encouraging inventions and innovations by a country or an economical region, the invented products are getting a certain degree of protection which makes the technology in the region have a more exclusive market advantage. As we have entered into the era of the knowledge economy, the patent applying, licensing and transferring of patent commercialization and patented marketing, infringement analysis / identification, patent litigation, patent price appraisal, etc., are the subject concern from various enterprises in regardless of labor-intensive industries. As Taiwan has entered into the WTO, the frequencies of economic and trade interaction with countries in the world are increasing, especially in the relevant provisions under TRIPS, those of countries within the more equality and mutual benefit environment are gradually started the exchange of intellectual property rights, to achieve a deeper level of human civilization after technological exchanges, which are promoting global prosperity and social progress.

1. Patented R&D

To those of general individuals or manufacturers, due to the shortage of patent maintenance fees and commercialized capitals and the non affluent IP exchanging channel, has hindered the expansion of patent products market, which has also resulted in many outstanding patents lonely wasted through the valid patented years of time, finally became as public patents are indeed the regretful things. Even the worse situation, some manufacturers do not know those of effective patents are right at next door which in spite of are not complete but can be one-sided negates or increase bargaining chip when patent negotiation with the counterparty, and allow them lead to the high price, in effect an increase of unnecessary costs, therefore, the process of Design and R&D before the patent applying, are firstly needed to have proper planning for the management of intellectual property, patent applications with the reply, the avoiding design, layout patents, risk control (to prevent, circumvent), the analysis of the cost of IP value and market value in the patent cooperation, the effective supervision of patent period, or the assessment of IP rights of the authority transferring, etc., to see whether or not the product life cycle can directly create specific value for the company, and to judge what type of policy can adequately protect the new technologies? Shall use a single or group of patent protection? Or shall apply to domestic or foreign countries? What of products will be entered into what countries? Applying with the Paris Convention or PCT? To those of core technologies, should you consider the protection of "business secret"?

In short, the overall of patented R&D in the process should be oriented to the market and consider the patents to be licensed for commercialization, include the risk control to be based on the principles of patent protection, even more, how and which of those should be considered if company were confronting infringement proceedings in the future, and inclusively be planned as the prevention measures for risk avoiding.

2.Commercialized Patent

The patent licensing and transferring, in addition to expanding market share, can also be avoided the risk of putting all eggs in one basket, particularly in the implementation of the technology licensed to new areas for promoting inter-industry exchanges and cooperation so as to create new products and brands, speed up the cost recovery on R&D, which can quickly patent commercialized and achieve the purpose of best using the goods and the smoothly flow of goods.

As one of the joined members of the WTO, on the establishment of systemized patent must keep up with the tide of the world trends. In patent licensing and transferring, new cross-licensing or the started company patent investment for expanding the use of different modes. It is necessary to emphasis the IPR risk control of the oversea market expanding from patent analysis, the target country, market segments, patent layout, etc., and so for protecting the interest of authorizing, conveyance, beneficiary, assignment, trust, litigation or other relative acts of management or application of R&D results, so as to accelerate industrial upgrading of the capacity, and the goal will be the deeply planting the physical development for the industries globalization.

The patent authorization, in accordance with Article 59 of Taiwan's Patent Law, provides patent inventor for its invention of the franchise, trust, authorizing others to implement or the pledged rights setting, to those of being franchised licensee dedicated to the registration authority and which has not been registered shall not be allowable to against a third party, and so should be reminded to the authorized party.

Besides, the exclusive authority and non-exclusive authority divide the license revenue into the licensing fee and derivative interests of Royalty to increase the opportunities of technology authorization and the niche of the patent conveyance. Which agitate the inventors and the executors of implementation the deeper thinking, narrow the between distance, and enhance the relationship of mutual co-operation, so as to produce a more harmonious mutual win-win on the process of the commercialized licensing.

3.Globalized Patent Marketing

According to The WEF report of "2007-2008 year global competition strength", the Taiwan “Industry State of Cluster Development” in 2007 continuously placed as the whole world 1st, honored as the reputable one of global innovation industry cluster development models. In addition, the Swiss Lausanne Management Institute (IMD) in 2007 the competitive ability annual report has pointed out, the Taiwan every 1,000 enterprises R&D manpower creates 373 patents, also is situated as the whole world first, including Taiwan's TFT-LCD panel board industry, no matter in shipping quantity or the output value, are also the whole world 1st in 2007.

The performance in the aspect of design industry, Taiwan had won 68 awards, which was only inferior to the host country Germany, were listed the second “iF” prize winner since 2003, up to 2007, Taiwan has accumulated more than 400 pieces industry design works obtained the affirmation of awards from German iF Industry Forum Design Award, American IDEA Outstanding Industry Design Award, German Red Dot, and Japanese Good Design Award. These of accumulated energy and increased exchanging of Taiwan Designs and Taiwan Patents should be shared with countries around the world, so as to produce the greater incentive effects and a virtuous circle, and speed up the footsteps of the globalized IP marketing for all industries.

In viewing of this, “DESIGN in TAIWAN” with “Design SO Coo!” based on the concept of global thinking, Taiwan Design, the integration of ODM manufacturing, particularly build this patent message interchanging platform, providing more creative options to assist companies reduce development costs, increasing the strength of R&D and technology production, creative designers, patent marketing, international procurement, etc., the multi-channel interchanges for shortening the marketing cycle, opening up new access road, and expecting to have internationalized the patent marketing, so as to create more international business opportunities for domestic inventors, designers, ODM manufacturers.

The Taiwan's motorcycle industry entered into the era of “Jet Engine”, so as to create the motorcycle Kingdom with the reputation of MIT http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_26.html In order to positively respond to alleviate the greenhouse effect of carbon and energy saving, and followed the world's most stringent environmental standards of Phase 4, Taiwan has again launched the Phase 5 the most stringent environmental standards. Phase 5 motorcycle emission standards noticed on 2006.7.1, formally implemented on 2007.7.1, and after 2009.1.1, all locomotive products can only be produced in accordance with the regulations of Phase 5 the green technology in Taiwan.

All locomotives produced in conformity with the Phase 5 standards, in addition to having passed the double test of “Dynamic Energy & Environmental Protection” from advanced countries t, but also received the encouragement of order placing from U.S. and Europe, such as Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Finland and other countries, which furthermore will bring Taiwan motorcycle manufacturing into the new millennium of "Jet Engine" , so as to create the Motorcycle Kingdom with the reputation of MIT.

Those of manufactures of Taiwan ODM and the OBM have applied ISC (Idle Speed Controller) to automatically control the speed for somewhat idle rotation which transfers the computer for properly controlling the installment of engine blow and ignition for effectively reducing 50% pollution exhaust and saving 18% oil consumption, which contains “oxygen O2 Sensor ", " Three Elements Catalyst “ for waste gas processing, and "Auxiliary Air Siphon System " the high technical parts and the catalyst converter conformity, so as to reduce the pollution of “Jet Engine” motorcycle.

The most functional features of “Jet Engine” motorcycles are "Fuel-Efficient, Environmental Protection, and Strong Momentum". Engine Management System (EMS) and (Fuel Injection) FI jet technology were initially used in aircraft and vehicles on the competition, however make it to be used in motorcycles is another kind of innovation in Taiwan.

Note: The so-called “Phase 5 Emission Standards Taiwan” is the standard value of emission of carbon monoxide (CO) significantly reduced to 2.0g/km from 7.0g/km of Phase 4th standard, which hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are under controlled separately and individually, the emissions standard from those of motorcycles below 150cc shall be respectively reduced to 0.8g/km and 0.15g/km from2g/km, and the emission of those of motorcycles above 150cc shall be limited to 0.3g and 0.15g from 2g/km.

Carbon monoxide emissions control standards is 3.5 times more stringent than Phase 4, the emission pollution can be substantially reduced more than 50%, low fuel consumption rate can be reduced by 18 percent, high-speed fuel consumption rate will be decreased by more than 30%, hydrocarbon compounds and nitrogen oxides are 5.0% more strict, which standard, in comparison with the implemented EU standard, are the more stringent standards. In addition to raising the standards of air pollutants, Phase 5 standard are using the cold-start programmable controlling to do the testing, and applying computers to sense environmental variation for injection volume changing at any time, whenever maintenance needed, any defect parts and faults are detected by computer which will increase the convenience and transparency for motorcycles maintenance.

Taiwan's Retail Sales Edge Down 0.4% in June http://www.cens.com/cens/html/en/news/news_inner_24102.html Taipei, July 23, 2008 (CENS)--With consumers tightening their purse strings amid economic slowdown and mounting inflationary pressure, retail sales in Taiwan edged down 0.4% year-on-year to NT$268.8 billion in June, the first such decline since October 2006 when the twin-card debt storm was ravaging Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

The hardest-hit sector was auto/motorcycle and parts sector, whose sales plunged 24.04% year-on-year in the month, the largest drop since March 2006. In view of the soaring gasoline prices, local people were reluctant to buy cars, as a result of which auto sale, as measured by the number of new auto license plates, plummeted 28% year-on-year. In the first half this year, auto sale tumbled 22%.

Motorcycle sales jumped 16.1% year-on-year in June, as many people substituted motorcycles for autos, which, though, failed to bolster the overall sale of auto/motorcycle and parts, since motorcycle accounts for only 10% of the sale of the sector.

Non-store sale bucked the trend, scoring 12.29% sale growth, the highest among various retail sectors, in June, notably direct sale, TV shopping, and online shopping.

Despite the vigorous promotional activities of major department stores, retail sale of general commodities only advanced 3.5% to NT$63 billion in June, with total sale in the first half rising 5.2% to NT$389.5 billion..

Of the amount, the sale of convenience-store chains inched up 0.97% in June, that of supermarkets grew 10.89%, and that of department stores rose 5.24%.

Yulon to Invest Extra US$23.1 M. to Sell LUXGEN in Mainland China http://www.cens.com/cens/html/en/news/news_inner_24141.html Taipei, July 28, 2008 (CENS)--The board of directors of Taiwan-based Yulon Group, the largest automobile manufacturing conglomerate on the island, recently resolved to pour additional US$23.1 million into setting up dealers for the house-branded LUXGEN automobile in mainland China.

Most of the capital would go to setting up dealers in major cities in China such as Shanghai, Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) etc., Yulon said.

For the development of LUXGEN own-brand cars in both Taiwan and China markets, Yulon CEO Kenneth Yen originally planned to let affiliated Tai Yuen Textile Co., Ltd. be the major investor in the newly created business to evade upsetting foreign technical partners as Nissan, Japan and General Motors (GM).

Mainly concerned about brand image, Yen, however, finally decided to let Yulon handle the establishment of the Luxgen Motor Co., Ltd. because the group has a higher presence in China.

Senior Yulon executives confirmed that Yulon has established a joint venture with Zhejiang Zhoungyu Group to sell LUXGENs. Yulon hopes to formally kick off mass production of LUXGEN models with self-developed 2,000cc turbo-charged engine, including offering multi-purpose van (MPV), sport utility vehicle (SUV) and sedan.

Industry sources said that in Taiwan Yulon has commissioned its parts supplier to start tooling works, and Yulon`s auto plant in Sanyi, central Taiwan, is scheduled to trial-produce a seven-seat MPV, which is expected to be launched in Taiwan by the second quarter of 2009.

Nouvelle promises 'softer' recycled toilet paper http://www.smartplanet.com/news/household/10001447/nouvelle-promises-softer-recycled-toilet-paper.htm Got a red bum from going green? Toilet paper maker Nouvelle says it has the solution in the shape of its new recycled loo roll that's "astonishingly soft." Perhaps I need to do some in-depth tests, but I've never found supermarkets' own-brand recycled stuff particularly scratchy. What about you, SmartPlanet people?

Nouvelle does at least have some pedigree -- it's been flogging recycled loo roll since 1989. I've asked for more information on how exactly Nouvelle's made the paper softer, as I have a sneaking suspicion it may involve using more paper. Which obviously wouldn't be so green. You should be able to buy the new Nouvelle Soft in supermarkets now.

If you've had scratchy experiences with recycled loo roll -- I'm thinking anything that reminds you of school toilets -- let me know in the comments.

Also -- any recycled toilet roll brands you recommend? I like the Co-op's FSC-certified stuff and Suma's recycled rolls.

Win! One of two Firebox.com eco packs http://www.smartplanet.com/news/household/10000318/win-one-of-two-firebox-com-eco-packs.htm As the nights draw in we all need a bit of cosy lighting to get into the festive spirit and well, see what we’re doing when it gets pitch black at 4pm. Rather than wasting energy with glaring electric lights, it's best to keep it green with a solar powered light.

And, would you know it, we’ve got two eco-packs from Firebox.com to give away to two light-deprived readers, each containing a Sun Jar, recycled bag and an outdoor solar light.

The Sun Jar (£20) holds a solar cell, battery and LED lights, which means it can collect energy from the sun (or an artificial light) during the day and then use this to give out a warm glow as dusk falls.

If you're sick of the sight of those "I'm not a plastic bag" carriers, the Cambodian Recycled Rice Bag (priced from £13) is a much better alternative. Made in Cambodia by an organisation that provides shelter, education and employment to vulnerable women, the bags are also reversible so you can match them to your outfits...if you so wish.

Finally there’s a single Solar Light (pictured below), containing a rechargeable NiCad battery and solar panel, which moves through different colours so it’s like having your own personal colour therapist -- but slightly cheaper. They also float so you can put one in your pond (as long as it doesn’t scare the frogs) or just hang it up for an evening garden party.

This competition is now closed. Here are the two lucky winners:

100 Taiwanese companies among Sony's green procurement list http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_19.html 100 Taiwanese companies are included among Sony's list of "green procurement" companies, reported the Economic Daily News.

Green procurement is one of Sony's 'next generation' strategies as part of its commitment to social corporate responsibility, said Naofumi Hara, Senior Vice President of the Sony Group, at a recent conference on Southeast Asian economies.

Sony buys components and parts from over 10,000 companies around the world, according to Hara. While Taiwanese companies comprise a small proportion in number, they account for the highest amount of earnings, he said.

A current example of a green procurement product is Sony's OLED TV, which was recently launched in Japan under the Bravia brand name.

Sony's green procurement partners are composed of 9,000 equipment manufacturers, 700 materials companies, and 200 OEM/ODM manufacturers. All companies in the supply chain conform to the European Union's RoHS standards for materials, says Sony.

Sony's Taiwanese suppliers mainly provide components, raw materials, and OEM services. Delta Electronics was the first Taiwanese company to receive Sony's certification since the company initiated green procurement in 2002. Other companies on Sony's procurement list include Quanta Computers and Honhai Precision, as well as flat panel makers AUO, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and Hannstar.

Tech Preview: Sea Otter Classic http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/tech-preview-sea-otter-classic-15770 The 18th annual Sea Otter Classic is set to kick off next week in Monterey, California with another comprehensive round of road and mountain races and events. Along with its status as a traditional early season open, though, Sea Otter continues to maintain its place as a premier venue for manufacturers to provide an early look at upcoming new products.

This year’s event will host nearly 250 exhibitors, including major bicycle manufacturers such as Trek and Gary Fisher, Specialized, Giant and Cannondale, all of whom should have demo bikes on hand in addition to upcoming new treats. A slew of component companies will display their wares as well, including SRAM, Shimano, Fox Racing Shox, Race Face, Ritchey and Reynolds Cycling. Even smaller niche brands will be on site such as BMC, Cervélo and others. In fact, it’s almost easier to list who won’t be there than who will be.

We’ve already gotten a small taste of what’s to come: RockShox will show off a redesigned Reba chassis including its slimmed-down Maxle Lite 20mm thru-axle system; Ritchey will introduce two new Break-Away frames and a number of new components; Ellsworth will unveil its revamped Moment all-mountain platform; and Thule will launch new hitch- and roof-mounted racks.

We’ll have to wait and see what else will be on hand but rest assured that it will be well worth the patience. In the meantime, feel free to check out last year’s coverage for a taste of what’s to come.

Taiwan yacht building industry ranks the world's fifth http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_16.html Taiwan's yacht building industry received a boost in 2007 and climbed to fifth place worldwide, according to US yachting magazine ShowBoats International.

Taiwan builders received orders for 71 'superyachts', which measure 80 feet or above. The total number of feet on order with Taiwanese builders in 2007 was 6,867 feet, representing record growth of 60%, according to ShowBoats International.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) says that it projects a total of NTD 3 billion has been invested in new factories or expansion over the past three years, thanks to a continuous stream of international orders. Production capacity is expected to continue to grow, which will bring increased overall industry output in 2008 and 2009, said the bureau.

The market has flourished over the past three years, says the IDB. According to the bureau, from 2006 to 2008, yacht orders increased in terms of total length of boats from 81,814 to 113,520 feet. These figures showed growth of 7.9%, 15.3%, and 20.2%, respectively. The total number of boats increased from 688 to 916, showing growth of 6%, 12.9%, and 17.9% over the past three years.

Synopsys to build second R&D center in Taiwan http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_15.html Synopsys, one of the world's leading electronic design automation (EDA) companies, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to build its second R&D Center in Taiwan.

The company's Vice President, Paul Lo, was in Taiwan recently to sign the memorandum.

Synopsys will invest NTD 500 million in the new center, which will focus on EDA software for nanotechnology production. EDA software is mainly used by upstream IC design suppliers.

The new center will help Taiwan's IC suppliers adopt more advanced production processes and increase their competitive edge in the international sphere, says the MOEA.

According to the MOEA, Synopsys' main considerations in choosing to build a second R&D facility in Taiwan were its world-class chip OEM capabilities, human resources and integrated supply chain for the semiconductor industry.

Synopsys is receiving assistance from the government for its new center: funding for its construction will be partially subsidized by the MOEA Department of Industrial Technology, and personnel will be available through the government's alternative conscription program.

Synopsys' new center could be the start of a new trend. MOEA officials say that another major EDA company, Cadence of the US, is also considering establishing an R&D Center in Taiwan.

According to the MOEA, Synopsys plans to expand its design engineer personnel from 100 to 170 persons within three years at the new R&D center. The research focus for the center will be in EDA solutions at the latter stages of IC design, including high-level technologies such as Analog Mixed-Signal Circuit Simulation.

IBM sees returning "Taishang" as business opportunity http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_13.html IBM Taiwan sees returning 'Taishang' – the Chinese language name for Taiwan businesses and business people abroad-- as a potential business opportunity, says the company's General Manger Sophia Tong.

Many Taishang are returning because they are thinking of 'returning to their roots' as they grow older, observed Tong. If Taiwan is able to provide a good investment environment, Taiwanese businesspeople would naturally wish to return, said Tong.

Tong noted that by addressing development issues such as the "three links", Taiwan could encourage more Taishang to return to the island. Companies returning to Taiwan may find a business opportunity with IBM – the company is placing more emphasis on emerging markets in Asia, and IBM Taiwan is striving to take part in these opportunities, she said.

It is difficult to assess the market for returning Taishang, and IBM hopes to help companies assess their IT needs by providing a 'flexible establishment method', said Tong.

Making these comments after the recent presidential election, Tong also announced that IBM would be releasing a 'White Paper' in April, which will offer recommendations for the new administration, according to a report by the Economic Daily News. The focus of the white paper will be on developing innovation and services, she said.

IBM also released a white paper around the time of the last presidential election, noted Tong, who emphasized that IBM Taiwan takes a neutral stance with regards to politics. The company also released a similar document in South Korea after its recent presidential election.

Taiwan export orders, industrial production grow in Feb http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_12.html Export orders and industrial production both showed notable growth in Feb., according to an announcement by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

Taiwan export orders in Feb. grew by 18.08% year-on-year, totaling USD 25.88 billion.

Electronics accounted for the highest amount of export orders in Feb., growing by USD 1.13 billion year-on-year, thanks to stable growth in demand for consumer electronics. Also, during the same month, backed by strong demand in the flat panel screen market, precision instruments grew by USD 950 million year-on-year.

Hong Kong and China placed the highest number of export orders in Feb., which totaled USD 6.52 billion. The US followed in second, with a total of USD 6.13 billion in orders, and posting 8.95% growth year-on-year.

Export orders during Jan. and Feb. combined totaled USD 56.19 billion, growing by 17.43% year-on-year.

Taiwan's industrial production index grew by 15.22% in Feb., but decreased in Jan. by 15.63% because of the fewer number of work days due to the lunar new year holiday.

The manufacturing sector grew by 16.21%, in Feb., marking its seventh month in a row for double-digit percentage growth. This growth has resulted from increased production by semiconductor, flat panel, wireless IT and petrochemical manufacturers, says the MOEA.

As for other sectors in Feb., water, electricity and gas production grew by 9.04% year-on-year, while mining and quarrying and housing construction each decreased by 2.28% and 2.59%, respectively.

Earth Day Exclusive: PC Recycling for a Brighter Future http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_11.html ASUS, Intel and Tsann Kuen Collaborate to Promote PC Recycling, Create Opportunities for the Less Fortunate and Help Save the Earth

Taipei, Taiwan, April 24, 2008 – In 2004, 20-50 million tons of e-waste was produced worldwide, according to research carried out by Greenpeace. This will equal the total waste produced in Taiwan in 2 to 6 years time. In light of this, inappropriate disposal of IT-waste will no doubt cause irreparable damage to the earth we live on. At a press conference in commemoration of Earth Day (22nd April), ASUS and Intel, together with electronics retailer Tsann Kuen Enterprise, have announced plans for a collaboration to help the environment through a "PC Recycling for a Brighter Future" program – showing how the IT industry has taken the initiative to work together for collection and recycling of old laptops, PCs and LCD monitors in a bid to help the environment.

Green ASUS: The Leading Eco-Friendly IT Brand
In order to take corporate social responsibility and provide goodwill towards society, ASUS has led by example and formed an alliance with Intel and other non-profit organizations to implement the "PC Recycling for a Brighter Future" project.

"Emphasizing the eco issue and contributing to society are core values of ASUS." said Jonney Shih, Chairman of ASUS. He also mentioned, "Through the four main tenets of Green Design, Green Procurement, Green Manufacturing and Green Marketing, ASUS will constantly strengthen the company´s environmental stance and prolong the product life cycle through recycling to protect the environment."

ASUS not only took the initiative to produce lead-free products ahead of the EU´s directive on RoHS, it also established the Green ASUS certification, which contains higher standards than the trade union. This certification ensures that products need to abide by ASUS´ stringent inspection standards from design, procurement, manufacturing and marketing. This high requirement allowed ASUS to achieve Oekom´s (Europe´s longstanding environmental protection organization) affirmation in Environment Rating for IT and Computer Peripherals; and also helped gain the top position in environmental protection in global electronics in 2007.

"Good corporate responsibility towards society is one of the core values at Intel. Besides developing lead- and halogen-free processes for product development, Intel has been concentrating efforts to utilize recycled materials, water-saving resources as well. We are also continuously making improvements in innovative product design, like the 45 nanometer high-k gate process to produce processors that are more powerful and more energy efficient." said Jason Chen, Country Manager of Intel Taiwan. "Moreover, this is in line with Intel´s promise to the "Climate Savers Computing Initiatives plan", which details an initiative for global industry leaders to develop standards for energy efficient computer components and parts. Working with ASUS on the "PC Recycling for a Brighter Future" project is a perfect opportunity to extend Intel´s long-term commitment to environmental protection and to help bridge the digital gap in Taiwan."

"Tsann Kuen advocates action-oriented environment protection, and seeks to utilize the 3C platform to help in environment-friendly and energy saving activities." said Jerry Yen, General Manager of Tsann Kuen Enterprises. He adds, "We hope to utilize our "0 carbon action" plan as this years main target, in order to encourage customers to help save the earth by purchasing more environmentally friendly merchandise."

Eco-Friendly Products for the Mass Market
In order to provide consumers with more choices in green products, and also to provide a means for eco-friendly products to be part of daily living, ASUS has constantly been researching to provide eco-friendly products. ASUS thus provides various green products such as motherboards, laptops and LCD monitors; and all of ASUS´ green products are certified by Green ASUS – the most exacting environmental standard.

ASUS EPU for 80.23% CPU Power Savings!
The ASUS-developed EPU is the world´s first on-demand power saving microprocessor. This innovative power technology digitally monitors and automatically fine-tunes the CPU power supply with improved VRM efficiency under any loading for up to 80.23% CPU power savings. This translates into a single EPU motherboard saving up to 33,000 watts of electricity after one year´s continuous operation – about 20.743 kg reduced CO2 emissions. If 10 Million EPU motherboards are shipped, the energy saved will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 207 metric kilotons annually. That is equal to growing more than 17.2 million trees, each reducing 12kg of CO2 in a year!

ASUS VK192S LCD Monitor: Energy Star Certified to Save Energy
From material selection to manufacturing and marketing, the ASUS VK192S LCD monitor strictly adheres to ASUS' highest standard of environmental protection – Green ASUS. Not only is the VK192S eco-friendly, it also incorporates the exclusive ASCR contrast technology and Splendid™ Video intelligent technology to provide an excellent 4000:1 high contrast and vivid image quality; as well as a built-in camera and speakers. What's more, it is Energy Star compliant – making it the best choice for performance and eco-friendliness!

ASUS S6 / U6 Bamboo Notebooks: Innovative Use of Nature´s Materials
Many people believe that technological products will never deviate from materials like plastic, cement and metal; and will not be easily recycled. In nature, bamboo carries a touch of spiritual warmth with its unique tactile surface and its refreshing fragrance; while in the Chinese culture, this unique character symbolizes a serene wisdom that takes the soul through a journey of aesthetic realms. It is this exact poetic quality that so endeared itself to ASUS´ engineers, who utilized it as an alternative material in its production of the ASUS S6 / U6 notebooks – creating a brand new vision and sensory tactile experience.

Green Design is a very important part of ASUS´ research and design department. "Choosing bamboo as an alternative material helps the environment in many different ways." said Mitch Yang, Division Manager of ASUS Design. He adds," Not only is it more attractive, the natural material also constantly reminds the users to help preserve the environment."

ASUS RS160-E5 Servers Save up to 45% Power Loss
The ASUS RS160-E5 server, which features the 80 plus® certified power supply and innovative green design, provides customers with several "green" and "energy-saving" solutions. ASUS´ Green Design servers feature energy saving server power supplys, and are able to improve power efficiency, reduce heat dissipation and save up to 45% power loss. Not only does it prevent power loss, it is also very energy efficient – requiring less power input per unit and helps customers save more money on power bills. For example, the total AC input of 1KKWatt from the data center can power about 15% more green servers with 80+ PSUs.

ASUS PIKE (Proprietary I/O Kit Expansion) Technology: The Flexible Storage Interface
ASUS´ servers provide users with the best options when it comes to storage. The RS160-E5 utilizes an ASUS exclusive SAS upgrade kit to provide flexible storage options. The optional PIKE 1064E SAS (with Integrated RAID 0, 1, 1E support) or PIKE 1078 SAS RAID (with Hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 support) is standalone modules that provides customers with multiple I/O solutions while not sacrificing expandability in any way – allowing them to save in terms of cost, and help reduce materials that lead to IT-waste.

ASUS ES5000 Desktop PC: Quiet, Flexible and Energy Saving
Unlike other solutions that contain higher volumes and require 200W power consumption, ASUS´ ES5000 desktop was designed with reduced volume to conserve materials in mind. Equipped with an Intel processor for effective power consumption, the ES5000 is small in size but big in performance. It is also certified with Energy Star, and only requires 2.7W per hour for operations. It is also equipped with the exclusive ASUS AI Gear 2, which is able to provide exceptional power savings during low loadings, as well as reduce noise during operations.

Recycling Old Products for Charity
Although 3C products have been improving all this time, there is a lack in terms of recycling means. That is why ASUS initiated Taiwan´s first Green Design system for easy reuse, easy recycling and easy disassembly and follows the European Union directive on the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This project aims at increasing the reuse and recyclability of products through careful material selection and easy-disassembly-conscious design. As products reach the end of their useful life, ASUS advocates responsible end-of-life management. ASUS is also pleased to announce that since September 2006, customers in the United States have been able to recycle old ASUS notebook computers free of charge. ASUS is proud to be the first Taiwanese company to take a step forward in taking extended producer responsibility by providing free take-back services in the United States.

For the "PC Recycling for a Brighter Future" project, consumers are encouraged to recycle their older devices at dedicated collecting points, like ASUS Royal Clubs, Tsann Kuen 3C chain stores and DF Recycle – where a discount voucher will be issued for each unit of desktop computer, laptop computer or CRT/LCD monitor handed in. All brands of these devices will be accepted, and after refurbishing, the working products will be donated to charity. This not only reduces the environmental concern in terms of IT-waste, it also allows these computers to gain a new life in the hands of the less fortunate – creating many benefits from just one exercise.

ASUS looks forward in inspiring the general public´s participation by inviting more individuals, enterprises, NPOs, NGOs and the government to contribute to the campaign. The goal is not only to assist the less fortunate people, but also to create a "greener" earth for all.

The 2008 27th Young Designers Exhibition has successfully been ended in 1st Hall of Taipei World Trade Center at 15th Ma http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_10.html Visitors are really taking good advantages from the exhibition, the minor defect are that there were no visitors amount being controlled which caused too crowded inside, due to the weekend holidays so as to see only everywhere the person.

Although human tide crowded, but the displayed art works from various universities, colleges and
Institutes were actually appealing. Because of the energy crisis, this year you had seen many industry designs merged with the environmental protection and energy conservation idea in the worked pieces, and adopted the subject of ECO as the basic design concept are also the cases everywhere.

A piece of quite noticeable work, is the student of Ming Chi University of Technology cooperates with MSI company to develop a personalized robot which demonstrated student's creativity ponder has accompanied with the very big market potential.

Actually Taiwan's innovation ability with designs from talented person is quite rich, the domestic design team in overseas repeatedly attained the good results especially in recent years, keep international stage knowing that Taiwan has not only OEM won the superiority, including design strength can also show its’ influence, I believed Taiwan certainly could become the most innovative on design competitive ability the country, everybody together diligently work together!

Emily Pilloton Wants You to Design For People, Not Consumers. http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_9.html Emily Pilloton is the founder of Project H Design and she is asking you, or more specifically, people who design things, to focus your efforts on designing solutions to global human issues; the lack of food, water, shelter, education, even money. She wants you to help solve these problems not with a few cents a day, but with a small portion of your time and talent, and I completely agree with her. Some of the most effective solutions to these problems have come from commercial designers and organizations who have dedicated a small amount of their efforts towards meeting the needs of a global population. Examples that come easily to mind would be the LifeStraw, the Hippo Roller, and very recently, the creation of a $100 wind turbine. Each of these creations were designed with the needs of a local population in mind, most using local resources for production, and all filling a critical need.

Taiwan's new President Ma says Chinese diplomatic pressure bad for relations http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_8.html TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's new President Ma Ying-jeou said Wednesday that rival China needs to let the island take part in international organizations or risk a downturn in relations.

Ma's comments to reporters came on his first full day in office, and two days after Chinese pressure scotched Taiwan's bid for observer status in the World Health Assembly, a U.N. body.

"If (China) continues to squeeze us, obviously the people of Taiwan will not have a positive image of the mainland, which is detrimental to what (China) wants - namely cordial and smooth cross-strait relations," Ma said.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing still claims the island as part of its territory, and has threatened war if Taipei moves to make the break permanent. China has long opposed anything that gives Taiwan the trappings of sovereignty, including participation in international organizations.

Ma was elected on March 20 on promises to improve ties with Beijing after eight-tension-filled years under the leadership of pro-independence President Chen Shui-bian.

On Wednesday, Ma reiterated his intention to reduce tensions across the 100-mile-wide (160-kilometer-wide) Taiwan Strait, one of the world's perennial hotspots.

"Our goal ... is to make cross-strait peace," he said.

However, he also reaffirmed his determination to safeguard the island's security.

"What we are trying to do is to build a small but strong deterrent force so that the mainland will not consider to use force against Taiwan," he said.

Ma said that Taiwan will continue to procure defensive arms from abroad to bolster its security, but that it will not build or acquire nuclear weapons, in keeping with longtime policy.

Arab mediators announce deal between Lebanese factions, say it's to be carried out immediately http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_7.html BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Arab mediators announced Wednesday a breakthrough deal between feuding Lebanese factions that was struck after five days of talks in Qatar to end Lebanon's 18-month political crisis.

Announcing the agreement, Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani said at a morning ceremony in Doha that the agreement will be "carried out immediately" and that the election of a new president of Lebanon will follow within 24 hours.

The agreement was a major triumph for Lebanon's Hezbollah-led opposition, as it met the side's two key demands - veto power in a new national unity government, and an electoral law that divides up Lebanon into smaller-sized districts, for better representation of the various sects.

A few bursts of celebratory gunfire broke out in Beirut's after the announcement. Lebanese television stations, which broadcast the Qatar ceremony live, showed Lebanese politicians and their Arab hosts congratulating and hugging one another.

The Qatar-hosted talks came on the heels of Lebanon's worst internal fighting since the 1975-90 civil war, with clashes raging earlier this month between pro-government groups and the opposition raging in the streets of Muslim west Beirut, the central mountains and the north. At least 67 people died.

As Lebanon came close to an all-out war, Arab League mediators intervened and got the sides to agree to hold negotiations in Qatar on resolving the crisis that has paralyzed the country.

Opposition-allied Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri also spoke at the Doha ceremony, saying that an opposition tent encampment, which has been going on for over a year in downtown Beirut across from the government building, will be dismantled Wednesday.

Berri said this would be a "gift" from the opposition, hailing the Doha agreement.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, also addressing the ceremony, said the Lebanese should draw lessons from what had happened and called on them to reject violence. He also called on Arab states to help support Lebanese forces, which kept a neutral role during the latest clashes.

Industrial designers see a new future for Taiwan http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_6.html In order to move from a manufacturing-oriented society to an innovation-based one, Taiwan needs to upgrade its design capabilities. Last Monday, four local design and industry leaders from Taiwan were joined by a German designer to discuss the issue of industrial design at the Industrial Design Forum Organized by Lite-On Technology Inc. 'Taipei Times' staff reporter Bill Heaney listened to David Chen, president of Era Technology, Elton Fang, general manager of Conser Corp, Christoph Boeninger, director of DesignAfairs GmbH, Paul Lo, chief technology officer of Lite-On Technology and Lin Rong-tai, president of Chang Gung Institute of Technology. The following are excerpts from their discussion

In the past, Taiwan focused on OEM (original equipment manufacturing), or custom-made products for others, and now it is moving to ODM (original design manufacturing), where it designs some features for its customers. What is the value of industrial design (ID) and what is its importance for Taiwan's future?

Paul Lo (駱捷中), Lite-On Technology (光寶科技): As the three markets of communication, consumer electronics and computers [3C] converge into one, it becomes very important for consumer products to have good ID. Colors and designs will be critical for products to be accepted by families in their homes.

Christoph Boeninger, DesignAfairs GmbH: Innovation in itself can be positive or negative. Cellphones today have the same computing power as notebooks did a few years ago. We have not just to think about technological innovation, but also service innovation. What kind of services do we have to offer to really drive innovation and really get a larger, broader acceptance of the innovations?

Lin Rong-tai (林榮泰), Chang Gung Institute of Technology (長庚技術學院): The ultimate goal is to add cultural value so that we can have our own branding and add our own value to products. I personally think we should keep our OEM cost-down advantages, then go into design and increase the value of our products before moving to OBM [own brand manufacturing]. ID, from the academic point of view, should be from the emotions. The designer should be the interpreter of science, mediating science to a more human form.

How do you find the balance between practicality and design? David Chen (陳世哲), Era Technology (世訊科技): Realization is the key. We need to understand the positioning in the market, who the user is and how they are going to use the product.

We need to keep learning new things, new design trends in the industry. I graduated 10 years ago and what I studied then is very different from what is needed now. With the design team, we create a concept. By using 3D modeling and verification, the innovations converge into the best proposal. The join between the front-end understanding to the back-end realization is very important, and what we need to capture and control is user-centered -- that is the most important.

Lo: Our customers represent the consumers at large as we are an ODM company and do not face end-users directly. We have to think about cost. This cannot be achieved by a single person -- it must be done by the whole team.

Boeninger: Design is very important. Look at luxury cars like Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, etc. The head of design is always part of the executive board. There is a chief executive officer and a chief financial officer, but also a chief design officer, or CDO. That shows how important design is for the success of the company and the product. If you ask a customer in Europe why they buy a cellphone, 80 percent will say they like the design. Siemens sell US$10 billion in phones per year.

Eighty percent of that is US$8 billion. If US$8 billion is directly linked to good design or bad design, then you see how much responsibility the designers have.

One brand -- Ericsson -- fell out of the race due to bad design. There was a Financial Times article about one year ago that read "Ericsson lost US$1.5 billion due to bad design."

What are the major differences between design in Taiwan, and design in other parts of Asia, the US and Europe? Chen: In Europe and the US they emphasize OBM as they have their own brands. They place the emphasis on front-end design, such as reasonable, accurate designing, then the development of the product.

They have to analyze the market and do market research and lifestyle studies. This is the major difference between the local market and overseas. The local manufacturer usually has to match the OEM/ODM timeframe. Designing a cellphone in Taiwan from design to mechanical structure, including prototyping, is carried out in a month and a half to two months, whereas to develop a new product it takes a lot of time and a lot of front-end work. This is what we have to improve in Taiwan.

Elton Fang (方浩實), Conser Corp (康哲國際): The difference is the way of thinking. In the Europe and US they start from the user's needs. In Taiwan, we think "if it is sold for NT$100 in one market, should my quotation be for NT$50 or NT$60, and then how do I fit the hardware specifications?" The remit of a Taiwanese designer is not very large. They cannot really integrate their concepts into the design. The supervisor says "this is what I want, they are very simple things, so in six weeks you should configure the design." The way you think determines the process.

Boeninger: It seems to me the design culture in Taiwan is traditionally very much linked to research and development [R&D] as you come from an OEM background. In comparison in the United States, you have a very strong link to marketing. Ideally the designer should be linked neither to R&D nor marketing, but should be a mediator between both, plus bring in bits of their own design aesthetics etc.

What can the Taiwan government do to upgrade the nation's industry in terms of ID?

Lo: For an ODM industry like us, we hope government policy has some benefit for us. We hope to implement ID in our mainstream work daily. Take for example the new second terminal at the CKS International Airport. [The government has] spent a lot of money on that, but the general feeling is that it is wrong, compared to Hong Kong and Singapore where they spent a lot more money. When the government works on infrastructure we should not only consider price but also ID as part of the bid. Then everybody will pay more attention to ID.

Boeninger: After the Second World War, the German people realized they had no resources. They realized that they had to add value to their products, they had to add design, which is one of the most effective values possible.

They founded design centers in the various regions of Germany, and their task was to promote the idea and power of design and also to gather designers together and lead them into design projects. Today these design centers still exist, but they get very little money from government.

They organize competitions like the iF Award and the Red Dot Award to finance themselves. Design is such a crucial part of any new development that the industry should be aware of the power and potential and we don't need the design centers any more. If an entrepreneur doesn't see that, then he should go bankrupt.

How can we nurture design talent in Taiwan and create our own design superstars? Lin: Lite-On's [third annual innovative design] award this year attracted 900 entries, which shows there is no shortage of design talent. We have one of the most diversified ID environments in the world with students from Taiwan, Japan, Europe, the US. We have incubated a very good environment in ID. Design is a gift or a talent. You can't really produce a superstar -- sometimes it just happens. From the academic sector, we can teach students methodology so they have real innovative competence. The government should also nurture innovation. And industry should provide opportunities for designers by planning to design innovative products.

Chen: In the last decade, especially the last two or three years as Taiwan has moved from OEM to ODM and now OBM, we have started to have a platform for designers. Each year the number of ID department graduates is increasing, but the percentage going into ID as their core business is rather low. I think the problem with Taiwan's education system is how we pass examinations and gain diplomas. We're talking about the curriculum and method of training. A good designer is a mindset.

An industrial designer is different from an engineer. Many people get into the ID field by accident. Schools should understand the needs of industry, just as industry should understand the needs of the market.

We need to nurture people who can actively think and ambitiously and effectively resolve problems, only then can we nurture a real superstar for our industry.

FEATURE: High-tech industry turns to innovation to survive http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_5.html Mike Liang earns the equivalent of US$37,500 a year, owns a four-bedroom apartment and can afford to send his two daughters to English tutorial schools.

Like other workers at the Hsinchu Science Park (新竹科學園區), Liang, a marketing manager for a semiconductor company, is the envy of many, as average annual salaries across the country have stagnated at around US$17,000 and high property prices keep many married couples living with their parents.

But what is on Liang's mind and that of many others is how the high-tech industry can maintain success amid growing competition from neighbors such as South Korea and price declines in products like laptops. The slower growth rate in sales of some high-tech goods and the economic downturn in the US are also worries.

Many industry workers and analysts say the nation's greatest economic challenge is overcoming the reliance on manufacturing for other brands and focusing on innovation and building its own brands.

"We have to transform ourselves," Liang said during a lunch break. "Otherwise, our costs will keep going up and companies will move to China and Vietnam."

High-tech products accounted for 70 percent of the nation's exports last year. Taiwan is the world's largest supplier of notebook PCs and liquid-crystal-display (LCD) panels for flat-screen televisions, the government said.

Two of the world's biggest contract microchip makers are based in Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電) and United Microelectronics Corp (聯電) -- and their foundries, the world's two biggest, are at Hsinchu Science Park, one of the nation's three such parks.

The Hsinchu park opened in December 1980, Southern Taiwan Science Park (南部科學園區) in 1996 and the Central Taiwan Science Park (中部科學園區) in 2003.

The Hsinchu park is home to 440 companies and is where most of the nation's leading high-tech manufacturers are based.

But profit margins for many of the companies in the park have been narrowing. Some have moved production to China, while others are considering relocation to Vietnam for lower labor and production costs.

"Back in 1999 and 2000, these companies enjoyed quite healthy profit margins," said Cheng Ming-kai (鄭明凱), regional head of technology research for CLSA, a leading Asia research, brokerage and investment group. "Now the number of companies in profit stage has dropped."

Revenue growth at Taiwan semiconductor companies, for example, has fallen to single digits from double digits. A main reason is what Cheng calls the "me, too" mentality -- too many companies all doing the same thing.

"A lot of companies think: `If you're going to make something profitable, I'm going to make the same thing slightly less profitable,'" Cheng said.

About 50 percent of the companies in the Hsinchu Science Park carry out semiconductor manufacturing, design or related work, with revenue from the sector comprising 71 percent of the park's total revenue.

Local companies are also largely focused on making products for global brands like Dell, Apple and Intel, instead of coming up with their own brands, and they focus on hardware manufacturing, where only a small percentage of the price the consumer pays for a product is earned.

As little as 5 percent of the consumer price for a product like a laptop can be earned by the Taiwanese companies that assemble them, while a higher percentage -- about 20 percent -- is earned by contract manufacturers that make chips or other parts for the brand holders, industry estimates indicate.

With their own brands, the companies could earn as much as 30 percent of the consumer value of a product, analysts estimate.

Hsinchu Science Park Administration director-general Huang Der-ray (黃得瑞) said companies in the park had increased spending on research and development from 4 percent of total revenue in previous years to 7 percent in the last three years.

Firms have also begun to focus on innovation and building their own brands. Mediatek Inc (聯發科), a chip design company that initially focused on optical storage drivers' chips, has ventured into other areas, including designing chips for wireless communications and high-definition digital televisions. The company is one of the most profitable in the science park and is considered a pioneer in its designs.

Several companies have focused on research into new technologies, including solar energy, Huang said. One, Gintech Energy Corp (昱晶), has been successful in designing solar panels, which it sells to power companies around the world.

More companies are moving toward design. A decade ago, only about 20 or 30 companies in the Hsinchu park were chip design companies, with most being contract manufacturers. Now, there are 80 companies whose focus is design, Huang said.

Workers like Liang, while worried, say they think Taiwan can pull off another economic miracle.

"I'm optimistic," he said, but added: "To compete, Taiwan has to invest a lot of money."

LEDs Are Making Inroads into General Lighting http://www.glorytrade.com.tw/news/hot_news_3.html OSRAM, together with its partners in the LED-Light-for-you (LLFY) network, is promoting LED technology for general lighting applications. The offered range of products, innovative technologies and services is showing the industry the way forward. The network is therefore ideally equipped to meet the demands of this fast-growing market segment.

In 2006, the internet platform www.ledlightforyou.com was set up on the initiative of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. It acts as a network for skilled partner companies throughout the world. When customers need a specific lighting solution they access this network. There they will find expert support in the areas that are essential to LED lighting solutions, namely optics, thermal management and electronics. LLFY also provides an opportunity to establish contact with experienced partners who can support projects by providing first-class help and advice.

LED lighting solutions of the highest quality

At the start of this year OSRAM Opto Semiconductors launched the Diamond DRAGON, an innovative high-power LED for general lighting. The product launch took place with the involvement of the LLFY partners. They took the opportunity to showcase products tailored specifically to the Diamond DRAGON at the same time – products such as matching electronic drivers and lenses.

“Cooperation between all the network partners on the basis of a common platform is a prime example of how to integrate the various competence areas. An LED alone does not provide light. With the appropriate system components combined to create an overall solution, the LEDs can be very quickly launched on the market for specific applications”, said Steffen Block, Project Manager for LLFY at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.

Further information on LLFY is available at www.ledlightforyou.com. The network will also be presented at the light + building fair from April 6 to 11, 2008, Hall 4.1 StandD 31, in Frankfurt.

On Electrical Properties of InN Materials http://www.ledinside.com/en/On_Electrical_Properties_of_InN_Materials_20080519 InN material is a kind of excellent semiconductor materials and plays an important role in photoelectron field. Due to the huge application potential and the secrets of the characters having been revealed, the InN material has already been one of the most attractive materials in recent two years.

InN film was synthesized by ammoniating indium film on Si (111) substrates, and there are two major problems in producing InN film currently.

The dissociation temperature of InN material is low and it dissociates at 600 ℃ around, while the decomposition temperature of NH3 is around 1000℃. This is a contradictory condition in the course of producing InN. The commonly used methods to manufacture InN currently are MBE, HVPE, magnetron sputtering and MOCVD.

The other problem is it is hard to find appropriate substrate. Single crystal is very difficult to get, so the first step is to get heter epitaxy InN film, and this requires dealing with the issue of lattice matching in crystal growth.

Indium nitride is one of the â…¢-â…¤ nitride semiconductors with a direct band gap of 0.7-1.0eV [1-4]. It has the smallest effective electron mass of all the group-â…¢ nitrides, which leads to high mobility and high saturation velocity, and a large drift velocity at room temperature [5-8]. Due to these properties of InN, it has potential applications in optoelectronic devices, such as LEDs and high efficiency solar cells, as well as high frequency (high power) electronic devices. In resent years, much effort has been made to grow InN film by various methods such as metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and reactive sputtering. In this letter, We report the synthesis of InN film by ammoniating In/Si thin film with radio frequency magnetron sputtering.

The In film was deposited on Si (111) using a JCK-500A r.f. magnetron sputtering system. The conditions of sputtering were as follows: the backgroud pressure was 4.0×10-4 Pa; The distance between targets and substrates was 8 cm; the pressure of Ar (99.999%) was 3 Pa. After 30s, N2 (99.999%) instead of Ar was introduced to the chamber. The pressure of N2 was 3 Pa. The In film was grown by sputtering an indium (99.99%) target with r.f. power of 150W for 15 min.

The InN thin film was synthesized by ammoniating the In thin film in an open quartz tube inside a horizontal quartz tube. Firstly, the samples were placed into the reaction system when the temperature of the system was increased to 700℃. Secondly, N2 was introduced into the system for 5 min to expel air and then NH3 (99.999%) with a flux of 500ml/min was introduced into the system for 2 hours. After nitridation, the quartz boat was quickly cooled down to room temperature in the flow of super pure N2 gas (99.999%).

In conclusion, structural and compositional characterization were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD, Rigaku D/max -rB Cu K), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR, TENSOR27) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS, MICROLAB MK â…¡).

In summary, InN film has been grown on Si (111) by nitriding indium film under a flow of ammonia at 700℃ for 2 hours. The samples have investigated by XRD, FTIR, XPS. XRD and FTIR reveal that InN we produced has a hexagonal structure with lattice constants a=0.354 nm and c=0.5705 nm. XPS confirms the formation of bonding between In and N.
